Set in the Netherlands during the late 1960s, Verder dan de Maan follows Caro, a young girl growing up in a large Catholic family.

While the world watches in excitement as astronauts prepare to land on the moon, Caro dreams of a happier and more peaceful life at home.

Her father Mees (Huub Stapel) struggles with alcoholism, creating tension and uncertainty within the family. Despite his problems, Caro continues to believe that things can change for the better.

As the historic Apollo 11 moon landing approaches, Caro becomes fascinated by the possibilities of space exploration and the idea that even the impossible might become reality.

Through the eyes of a young girl, the film explores the challenges of growing up in a troubled household while holding on to hope, imagination and the power of dreams.

With heartfelt performances, nostalgic 1960s scenery and an emotional storyline, Verder dan de Maan offers a touching portrait of family life, childhood innocence and resilience.

🌙 A Moving Dutch-Belgian Family Drama

Directed by Belgian filmmaker Stijn Coninx, known for the acclaimed film Daens (1992), Verder dan de Maan (2003) combines an intimate family story with the historical excitement surrounding the first moon landing.

Featuring powerful performances by Huub Stapel and Johanna ter Steege, the film captures the atmosphere of the late 1960s while exploring timeless themes of family, faith and personal struggles.

The story highlights the contrast between humanity's extraordinary achievements in space and the everyday difficulties faced by an ordinary family.

With its emotional depth, authentic period setting and memorable characters, Verder dan de Maan is a beautiful example of European character-driven cinema.

Perfect for fans of Dutch family dramas, historical films and emotional coming-of-age stories, this movie makes a wonderful addition to any collection of Nederlandse films and European cinema.
